Lewis Moghul, who was driving the car, was found to be more than three times over the legal alcohol limit for driving. Thames Valley Police estimated that the vehicle was traveling between 70mph and 100mph (113km/h and 160km/h) at the time of the crash.
During the inquest, it was revealed that a witness described the speed of the vehicle as "insane." The senior coroner concluded that Lewis Moghul's "failure to stay on his side of the road" while negotiating a bend, coupled with his decision to "drive at high speed while intoxicated," caused the loss of control that led to the accident.
The mother of Sammy Phillips, Justine Morris, read a statement during the inquest, emphasizing the tragic consequences of drink-driving and speeding among young people.
She urged young men to consider the impact on their families before engaging in reckless behavior behind the wheel. Sgt James Surman of Thames Valley Police also highlighted the risks associated with drink driving and speeding and called for young drivers to be aware of these dangers.
