West Midlands Teacher Forced into Hiding After Doctored Video Goes Viral
Cheryl Bennett received damages after false accusations in manipulated footage
A West Midlands teacher, Cheryl Bennett, faced a difficult period after a doctored video falsely accused her of making a racist remark while canvassing for the Labour Party.
The incident occurred in May 2022 while Bennett, a PE teacher from Wednesbury, helped colleague Qasim Mughal with leaflet distribution during local elections.
The altered footage, captured by a household security camera, purportedly showed Bennett using a racial slur against the homeowner.
The video quickly spread across social media platforms, amassing millions of views.
Among those who shared the video was Akhmed Yakoob, an independent candidate in the West Midlands mayoral election.
Yakoob's post included Bennett's name and place of work, urging others to leave the Labour Party.
Bennett took legal action against Yakoob, resulting in a settlement that included substantial damages and costs.
Her legal representative, Nick McAleenan of Brabners solicitors, highlighted that this case underscores emerging legal challenges associated with manipulated videos, especially with advancements in artificial intelligence and the widespread use of home security systems.
McAleenan noted, "It’s her voice but it’s been synthetically altered.
This settlement shows the risks of video misuse."
The investigation by West Midlands Police confirmed that the original audio contained no racial slurs.
Concurrently, Yakoob faces an inquiry by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
He expressed regret over the situation, stating his settlement as an acknowledgment of his mistake.
The viral video resulted in significant distress for Bennett, with her school receiving 800 formal complaints and her facing numerous abusive messages.
Her situation necessitated a temporary withdrawal from her professional duties for safety reasons.
Bennett reported having security cameras installed at her residence due to concerns over her safety.
The originator of the manipulated video remains unidentified.
Bennett described the experience as isolating, saying, "I was just constantly in survival mode." This event has been acknowledged as unprecedented within the UK’s political election context, although similar situations have been recorded internationally.
Bennett's experience highlights the potential personal and professional consequences of circulating misinformation through manipulated media.
