Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, and Northumbrian Water are facing a combined one hundred and sixty-eight million pounds in fines due to historic sewage spills, according to industry regulator Ofwat. Ofwat found significant failures by these companies in maintaining their sewage systems, leading to repeated raw sewage releases. Thames Water faces the largest fine at one hundred and four million pounds.
Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, and Northumbrian Water are facing a combined £168 million in fines due to historic sewage spills, according to industry regulator Ofwat.
The fines are part of Ofwat's largest-ever investigation into water company performance.
A public consultation will now follow the proposal.
Ofwat identified significant failures by the companies to invest in and maintain their sewage networks, leading to repeated raw sewage releases into England's rivers and seas.
Thames Water faces the largest proposed fine of £104 million, while Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water face fines of £47 million and £17 million respectively.
This action follows a BBC investigation revealing the illegal release of sewage 6,000 times in 2022 by English water companies.
Ofwat's ongoing investigation may see further penalties for other companies, as the regulatory body seeks to enforce better environmental stewardship in the industry.
