UK Police Impose Cenotaph Exclusion Zone Ahead of London Pro-Palestinian Protest

In anticipation of the scheduled pro-Palestinian protests in London, Scotland Yard has implemented significant security measures to ensure public safety during the Remembrance weekend. These preparations are a response to the potential for confrontations and to protect specific communities and landmarks during this period of national significance.
In a significant security measure, Scotland Yard has announced the establishment of an exclusion zone around London's Cenotaph, a prominent war memorial, effective throughout the Remembrance weekend. This move comes in anticipation of a large-scale pro-Palestinian protest planned in the city.


1. Exclusion Zone Around the Cenotaph:

The Metropolitan Police have delineated a specific area around the Cenotaph, enforcing stringent restrictions to maintain order during the commemorative events. Any pro-Palestinian protester found within this designated zone faces immediate arrest. To fortify this measure, metal barriers are being erected around key locations including the Cenotaph, Whitehall, Westminster Abbey Field of Remembrance, and Horse Guards Parade. Additionally, a vigilant 24-hour police guard will be stationed around the Cenotaph, extending through the entirety of the Remembrance Day ceremonies, concluding on Sunday evening.


2. Security Measures and Restrictions:

In a comprehensive approach to security, the Metropolitan Police have also enforced bans on assembly in sensitive areas, notably near the US and Israeli embassies. Dispersal zones have been established in various parts of the city, including Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus, to prevent large crowd formations. In an effort to ensure public safety, officers are empowered to conduct searches for weapons across significant portions of Westminster and Wandsworth. The police are also authorized to mandate the removal of face coverings, particularly if they are suspected of being used to disguise identities.


3. Response to Potential Confrontations:

These measures also aim to mitigate potential clashes between pro-Palestinian marchers and counter-protesters. Given the history of tensions and disturbances, Scotland Yard is proactively working to prevent car convoys from congregating in Jewish neighborhoods, responding to previous instances where such gatherings have instilled fear and distress. To enforce this, specialist traffic and public order officers are being deployed, ensuring the safety of all communities involved and addressing any legal infractions by participants in these convoys【27†source】.
