The UK government is setting up a £100m taskforce called the Foundation Models Taskforce (FMT) to accelerate the country's adoption of safe AI models.
Ian Hogarth, a technology entrepreneur who co-founded the music industry business Songkick, is a leading candidate to chair the FMT.
The taskforce is intended to be modelled on the
COVID Vaccines Taskforce and will focus on the "large language" platforms like ChatGPT and Google's Bard.
The FMT will also play a crucial role in ensuring that the government's major, multi-year funding for AI is strategically invested.
The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, recently met the US President,
Joe Biden, to discuss the future opportunities and threats posed by AI, and last week, another entrepreneur, Matt Clifford, warned about the potential risks of the technology.
The government is determined to establish the UK as a global hub for AI technology and oversight.
