Turkish Club President Arrested for Assaulting Referee
Faruk Koca, president of Turkish football club Ankaragucu, has been detained for assaulting referee Halil Umut Meler after a disputed 97th-minute goal led to a 1-1 draw with Caykur Rizespor. Koca and two others face charges for harming a public official, which led to the suspension of Turkish league matches. FIFA's Gianni Infantino condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for safety in sports. Koca has resigned and apologized, acknowledging his actions couldn't be justified.
During the game, both teams had a player sent off, and the tension escalated into violence post-match when Meler was attacked and suffered face injuries. Hospital reports indicate no permanent damage or brain injury is expected. Meler, an elite referee for FIFA and UEFA, described being punched and kicked.
Koca, formerly a Turkish parliament member, denies responsibility, blaming the referee's poor decisions and provocative behavior. Turkish President Erdogan expressed his disappointment and endorsed non-violence in sports.
Reactions have been strong: Ankaragucu and Caykur Rizespor apologized, Turkish FA postponed all games, and UEFA's Roberto Rosetti called for immediate action against abuse toward referees. A Turkish referees' association demanded safety changes before returning to the pitch, and the Turkish Super Lig, PGMOL's Howard Webb, and others have spoken out in support of Meler and against such violence.
