Ex-President Trump halts the CBP One app, closing an essential pathway for asylum seekers to enter the U.S. legally.
On January 20, 2025, just hours after being inaugurated for a second term, former President
Donald Trump issued an executive order effectively disabling the CBP One mobile app. This app had facilitated the legal entry of over one million undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers into the United States.
The app, initially rolled out in October 2020 to assist commercial trucking firms with border inspections, was expanded in 2023 by the Biden administration to aid migrants seeking asylum.
It became a central tool for securing asylum appointments at the U.S.-Mexico border, with 1,450 daily appointments allocated through a lottery system.
Trump's order halted the app's operations, canceling all current and future appointments, and declared a national emergency along the southern border.
This suspension cuts off the only method asylum seekers had to schedule legal entry appointments.
Additionally, Trump revealed plans to send troops to the southern border and suggested implementing a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada due to their border policies.
These changes are expected to be legally challenged by groups such as Amnesty International, but Trump's actions fulfill a major campaign promise to tighten U.S. immigration policy.
