New Period Drama "The Gallows Pole" Shines with Acclaimed Cast and Crew
The Gallows Pole is a new period drama produced by acclaimed director Shane Meadows, known for his works such as This Is England and The Virtues.
The show is set in West Yorkshire in the 1760s and follows the story of a notorious criminal mastermind named "King" David Hartley and his gang of coiners.
The cast includes both established and first-time actors, including Stevie Binns, a team leader in the financial industry who had never considered acting before, and Dave Perkins, a mechanic from Sheffield who had aspired to act but had never been given a break.
The open casting call for the show saw thousands of tapes submitted, with Meadows and casting director Shaheen Baig overwhelmed by the response.
The show features a mix of first-time actors and established names, with Meadows known for casting newcomers alongside his regular collaborators.
The Gallows Pole is a prequel to Benjamin Myers' award-winning book about "King" David Hartley and his currency racket, with Meadows explaining that the crime was one of the biggest ever committed, "pound for pound".
Despite his nerves about making his first period drama, Meadows was excited to bring this incredible story to life.
"The Gallows Pole" is a new television drama series set in West Yorkshire and filmed in and around Hebden Bridge.
It is based on the true story of a gang of "coiners" from the Hartley family who, in the late 18th century, were involved in a counterfeiting scheme but also used their profits to help the local community.
The show is produced by the same team behind "Happy Valley" and "Peaky Blinders" and features a cast including Steve Evets, Steve Coogan, and Rory Kinnear.
The series follows the story of King David (played by Socha) and his wife Grace (played by McShera) as they embark on the fraud to support their rural community.
The show is described as a "Robin Hood-style tale with a Peaky Blinders twist."
