The Conservative Party is conducting internal inquiries alongside the Gambling Commission. Four Tory members, including two candidates, are being scrutinized for allegedly placing bets. Sunak stresses that rule-breakers will be expelled and opposition leaders demand stronger actions.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has stated he is not aware of any additional Conservative election candidates being investigated by the Gambling Commission for allegedly betting on the date of the general election.
Sunak confirmed that the Conservative Party is conducting its own internal inquiries alongside the Gambling Commission's investigation.
The commission has not disclosed who it is investigating, but the names of four Conservative members, including two election candidates, have surfaced.
One of the accused, Craig Williams, admitted to a 'huge error of judgement' for placing a £100 bet on the election date but denied using inside information.
Other individuals under investigation include Conservative candidates Laura Saunders and Nick Mason.
Sunak emphasized that he will act on any findings and reiterated that anyone found guilty of breaking the rules will be expelled from the party.
Opposition leaders, including Labour's Sir Keir Starmer and Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, have urged Sunak to take stronger actions.
The Gambling Commission has stated it cannot release further details during the ongoing investigation.
