Raj Sidpara Receives Life Sentence for Murder in UK
Indian-Origin Man Convicted for Killing Girlfriend in Leicester
Raj Sidpara, a 50-year-old man from Leicester and of Indian origin, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Tarnjeet Riaz, also known as Tarnjeet Chagger.
The conviction followed a trial at Leicester Crown Court, where Sidpara was found guilty of killing Riaz in his home located in the East Midlands region of England.
Tarnjeet Riaz, aged 44, was in a relationship with Sidpara for about five months before her death on May 6.
She suffered severe trauma, including extensive facial injuries and multiple rib fractures.
Despite Sidpara's maneuvers to admit to a lesser charge of manslaughter, the evidence led to his conviction for murder, with a minimum incarceration of 21 years before eligible for parole, as confirmed by Leicestershire Police.
Judge William Harbage highlighted the brutal nature of the attack, and the court was informed of Sidpara's history of alcohol dependence and multiple convictions for prior offenses involving threats and harassment.
The case underscores the ongoing concern about domestic abuse, with Detective Inspector Emma Matts emphasizing the need for victims to seek help.
The sentencing coincided with Leicestershire Police's participation in 'White Ribbon Day,' aimed at combating violence against women and girls.
