Queen Camilla Honors Late Father at Catterick Garrison: Presents Medals to Royal Lancers
Queen Camilla paid a visit to Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire on Monday to present medals to members of the Royal Lancers regiment.
This was her first engagement with the regiment since being appointed as its Colonel-in-Chief in June 2023.
During the ceremony, she presented five Buchan Medals to active and retired soldiers.
The occasion held an homage to her late father, Maj Bruce Shand, who served with the 12th Lancers in World War Two.
The Royal Lancers, also known as the "eyes and ears" of the British Army, are trained to use various equipment, including drones, sniper rifles, and anti-tank missiles.
Maj Shand, a soldier in the 12th Lancers regiment, earned two Military Crosses during the retreat to Dunkirk in 1940 and the Battle of El Alamein in 1942.
He was captured in November 1942, resulting in serious injuries and the death of his crew.
The Queen's father, also a member of the 12th Lancers, was held captive in Spangenberg Castle until his escape in 1945.
During her visit, the Queen met with Maj Phil Watson, who served for 35 years with the regiment and wrote a book, "Their Greatest Hour," about her father and the regiment's role in guarding the British Expeditionary Force's withdrawal to Dunkirk.
Maj Watson presented the Queen with her late father's tunic, which was bought at a reasonable price through an online auction by the barracks.
The tunic was from a specific period, after Maj Shand received the Military Cross but before his capture during World War II.
The rest of his medal ribbons were missing because he had to wait until the end of the war to receive them after being captured.
