Poland Shoots Down Russian Drones in Airspace Violation During Ukraine Attack
First active military response as Poland neutralises drone threat amid escalating regional tensions
Poland’s military has, for the first time, actively shot down drones that violated its airspace during a significant Russian aerial assault on Ukraine.
The incident occurred during a large-scale Russian airstrike on western Ukraine.
Polish radar systems detected over ten aerial objects crossing into Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin regions.
Those assessed as threats were intercepted, with several drones confirmed destroyed.
Searches are now underway to locate crash sites, and the authorities have advised residents in affected areas to remain indoors.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incursion as “an act of aggression” and convened an emergency government meeting.
He is maintaining continuous communication with the NATO Secretary‑General.
Meanwhile, Polish air defences, supported by NATO assets including fighter aircraft, were deployed at maximum readiness.
Key airports—including Warsaw’s Chopin Airport—were temporarily closed in response to the heightened threat.
Operations have since resumed as immediate danger receded.
This marks a major escalation for Poland, which has previously experienced airspace breaches but refrained from direct military engagement.
The incident coincides with intensified Russian‑Belarusian military exercises near the border and growing concerns over regional security.
U.S. and NATO officials have voiced alarm, urging stronger sanctions and reaffirming alliance commitments.
Lawmakers described the drone intrusions as a test of NATO’s resolve.
The episode underscores growing friction on Europe’s eastern flank as conflict in Ukraine continues to broaden its impact.
