Nurse Kelvin Ramasta Jailed for £100k Theft from Elderly Patients
A nurse named Kelvin Ramasta, 30, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison for stealing over £100,000 from elderly and vulnerable patients at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
The thefts were described as "nothing short of horrific" by police.
Ramasta was caught after a bank reported suspicious activity on his account.
The hospital spokesperson expressed their apologies for the incident.
A man named Ramasta is accused of transferring £102,000 from another man's account over a three-month period, at a rate of £1,000 per day.
Additionally, Ramasta opened a bank account in the name of a 76-year-old man while working at Addenbrooke's Hospital.
The bank identified the account as belonging to Ramasta due to matching fingerprints.
The elderly man's family reported that he was almost unaware of his surroundings and was later diagnosed with dementia.
Police also investigated reports of thefts from other patients at the hospital, including a 74-year-old woman with Alzheimer's whose bank card and cheques went missing.
The incidents were described as "nothing short of horrific" by the police.
A week after being discharged from the hospital, an elderly woman passed away, and her daughter reported several missing items.
Meanwhile, a man named Ramasta tried to cash a forged check from the woman's account while he was suspended from work.
He incorrectly spelled her surname and forged her signature on the check.
The woman was bedbound and incapable of signing anything during the dates the checks were written due to multiple organ failure.
Ramasta attempted to cash the check three times and used it to buy £2.70 worth of food from a hospital vending machine.
He was arrested and interviewed on May 4, 2022, but initially denied the allegations.
