Newcastle United Fan's Final Wish Fulfilled with Carabao Cup Victory
Steven Hunter celebrates Newcastle's first major trophy win in 70 years amid health battle.
A Newcastle United supporter, Steven Hunter, recently diagnosed with terminal throat cancer, experienced an emotional moment as he watched his team secure the Carabao Cup, marking the club's first major domestic trophy in 70 years.
The match, which took place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, saw Newcastle defeat Liverpool with a score of 2-1. Hunter described the victory as 'the pinnacle' of his support for the club.
At 61 years old, Hunter received a prognosis in November indicating he had just six months to live.
Despite his health challenges, he expressed immense joy at witnessing Newcastle lift the trophy.
'Seeing them lifting the trophy yesterday was just an amazing moment,' he stated.
Hunter has been a lifelong supporter of Newcastle United and watched the final from his home in Monkseaton, Whitley Bay.
His relationship with the club includes a memorable meeting with manager Eddie Howe at St James’ Park last December, where he provided some tactical suggestions, including a recommendation for midfielder Sandro Tonali, who subsequently scored in the final.
'I like to think that he took that from me,' he joked about his interactions with Howe.
The outpouring of support has been significant, with fans from rival clubs, including Sunderland, sending him encouraging messages.
Hunter, a barber with over four decades of experience, remains positive about his condition, stating, 'I feel I’m going to way outdo my six-month prognosis.' He actively participates in physical activities, including gym workouts and swimming, as part of maintaining a hopeful outlook.
Looking forward, Hunter is also anticipating the upcoming boxing match between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, scheduled for April 26 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
