New Emails Trigger Fresh Review of UK Chancellor Reeves’ Rental Licence Issue
Downing Street receives new material following email review linked to Finance Minister’s letting error, but Prime Minister reaffirms confidence
New information has emerged from a review of emails sent by the husband of Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed on Thursday, following her admission of an error regarding a property rental licence.
The spokesperson said that the material has been passed to both the Prime Minister and the independent adviser on ministerial interests.
Downing Street stated that the Prime Minister continues to have full confidence in Reeves.
Reeves previously acknowledged that she and her husband had failed to obtain the required licence before renting out their London home, describing the oversight as an error.
The newly surfaced emails are said to relate to discussions with the letting agent about licence requirements and costs, which call into question the accuracy of her initial explanation.
At a time when property regulation and ministerial integrity are under intense public scrutiny, the disclosure adds a new dimension to the situation.
The minister’s team stated that she remains focused on delivering the government’s economic programme and emphasised her record in office.
Meanwhile, opposition parties and campaign groups have called for clarity on the contents of the email review and for an inquiry into whether her conduct meets ministerial standards.
Reeves now faces the task of addressing both the rental-licence issue and the newly disclosed email exchanges without delay.
