Limited parking near the station had led to commuters parking on nearby roads and verges, causing inconvenience to residents. The new car park provides nearly 200 additional spaces, funded by GWR and the Department for Transport.
It includes four electric vehicle spaces and an accessible route to the station. Improvements to the existing forecourt and bus stop, along with new lighting, are also part of the project. The car park will temporarily close again in the New Year for resurfacing.
Local resident Jeremy Mulford, who regularly uses the station car park, expressed relief that the new facility is open, as it addresses the parking issues faced by commuters.
The land purchase for the Castle Cary Station car park, including a nearby access road, reportedly cost GWR £3 million. The station manager, Jordan Welsby, emphasized their commitment to improving the railway's infrastructure and enabling more people to use train services.
The car park will close temporarily for resurfacing work, and GWR plans to inform customers of the closure dates as soon as their contractors confirm them.
