Mother and Partner Who Killed Toddler Alfie Phillips Sentenced to Life Imprisonment
A mother and her ex-partner received life sentences for the murder of her toddler, Alfie Phillips, after a prolonged night of violence that left the 18-month-old with over 70 injuries and cocaine in his system.
The sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court imposed minimum terms of 19 and 23 years for Sian Hedges, 27, and Jack Benham, 35, respectively, following their denial of the murder charge. Justice Cavanagh, condemning the brutal assault, stated Alfie should have been safeguarded by his mother.
The boy's father mourned the loss of watching his son grow up, devastated by memories of Alfie's funeral. The fatal incident took place in a caravan in Hernhill during a lockdown period, and the trial revealed a history of drug-related activity and previous injuries to the child.
Despite Hedges claiming she neither caused harm to Alfie nor witnessed Benham doing so, both were found complicit in the deadly assault.
Detective Chief Inspector Kathleen Way remarked that while the verdict won't resurrect Alfie, it serves to properly punish Hedges and Benham for the severe cruelty they subjected him to instead of providing the care and love he deserved.
