Emergency services respond to hazardous situation with evacuations and police arrest.
Authorities in St Leonards, East Sussex, have declared a major incident after the discovery of potentially explosive chemicals at a property located on the A259 Marina.
Sussex Police were called to the scene on Thursday and confirmed that the materials pose a serious threat to life.
A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of both producing illegal substances and making an explosive substance for unlawful purposes.
Law enforcement officials have stated that the incident is not being treated as terror-related.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team assessed the chemicals and confirmed their volatile nature.
A 100-metre cordon has been established between Caves Road and Sussex Road, impacting several residential properties in the vicinity.
Police have engaged with residents within this area, urging those who remain to evacuate in order to ensure their safety.
In coordination with the Sussex Resilience Forum, which oversees emergency responses in the region, Hastings Borough Council has set up a rest centre at the Royal Victoria Hotel for those displaced by the evacuation.
The incident has resulted in the closure of the A259 Marina at its junction with Caves Road and Sussex Road.
Superintendent Michelle Palmer-Harris commented on the situation, describing it as complex yet isolated, and emphasized the collaboration between various agencies in ensuring public safety.
Helena Dollimore, Labour MP for Hastings and Rye, has been in contact with the Home Secretary and has reported that approximately 30 properties have been evacuated, although the exact number of affected residents has yet to be confirmed.
The council has indicated that 42 households — accommodating individuals, children, and pets — are currently being assisted at the rest centre.
Authorities have advised that the evacuation process may continue throughout the day, and they will provide ongoing updates to the community as the situation develops.
