Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Host Lavish Wedding in Venice Amid Protests

Three-day celebration estimated at $46–56 million draws global attention and local criticism
Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and journalist Lauren Sánchez were married on June 27, 2025, in Venice, Italy, during a three-day event estimated to cost between $46 million and $56 million.

The celebrations included a ceremony at the San Giorgio Maggiore basilica and receptions at various historic venues across the city.

The guest list featured approximately 200 high-profile individuals from the worlds of business, entertainment, and politics, including Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, Ivanka Trump, and Bill Gates.

Attendees arrived via 90 private jets and were accommodated in luxury hotels such as the Aman Venice and Hotel Cipriani.

Sánchez wore a custom Dolce & Gabbana gown inspired by Sophia Loren's dress in the 1958 film "Houseboat." The dress, made of Italian lace, was designed over 18 months and featured a high neckline and hand-appliquéd detailing.

The wedding festivities faced criticism from local residents and environmental activists, who protested the event's extravagance amid Venice's ongoing challenges with overtourism and climate change.

Demonstrations included banners reading "No Space for Bezos" and inflatable crocodiles placed in canals.

In response, the couple donated €1 million to Corila, an organization researching the Venice lagoon ecosystem.

Security measures were heightened due to the presence of prominent guests and the potential for protests.

The main reception venue was changed from the Scuola Grande della Misericordia to the more secure Arsenale di Venezia.

Authorities implemented restricted zones and increased police presence to ensure the safety of attendees.

Bezos, with a net worth of approximately $234 billion, has pledged to donate the majority of his wealth to philanthropic causes.

He has previously contributed $10 billion to combat climate change through the Bezos Earth Fund and supports initiatives addressing homelessness and early childhood education through the Bezos Day One Fund.
