Hull Trains Drivers to Strike Over Dispute Regarding Colleague's Dismissal
Aslef union members plan an eight-week strike following the alleged unfair dismissal of a driver who raised safety concerns.
Drivers at Hull Trains are scheduled to initiate an eight-week strike starting from March 31 until May 24 in response to the dismissal of a colleague, which the drivers' union, Aslef, claims was unjust.
The strike threatens to disrupt services along the East Coast main line.
Aslef contends that a train driver was unfairly dismissed after they raised a safety issue during a meeting, a claim that Hull Trains has rejected.
According to Mick Whelan, the General Secretary of Aslef, the incident reflects a serious concern regarding the corporate culture within the railway industry, suggesting that it deterred staff from reporting safety concerns.
He stated, “The company’s failure to act responsibly has an impact – and enormous implications – not just for rail workers and passengers at the company but for staff and passengers right across the wider rail industry.”
Whelan emphasized the moral implications of the situation, indicating that workers should feel secure in reporting safety issues without the fear of repercussions such as losing their jobs.
In response, Hull Trains expressed disappointment at the announcement of the strike action.
A spokesperson for the company reiterated that safety remains their top priority, stating, “We’re disappointed to receive notice of further strike action from Aslef.” The company has stated that it is currently assessing the impact of the upcoming strike dates, and any adjustments to service will be communicated to affected customers in due course.
