How to cancel Spotify

How to cancel Spotify

Spotify Premium’s cancellation page has seen a huge uplift in visitors in recent weeks, data shows.

According to SimilarWeb, via CNN, there were 39,924 visits to the cancellation page on the week beginning January 17, and just a week later that number had jumped to 118,168.

Seemingly, the spike is connected to Joe Rogan’s controversial Spotify-exclusive podcast – which aired anti-vaccine views that musician Neil Young threatened to remove his music over.

Spotify announced it would include content advisory labels on podcasts about Covid-19 going forward – but a slew of stars continued taking their music off streaming service, while author Roxane Gay quietly removed her own podcast from Spotify.

And it would appear some Spotify users wanted to put their money where their mouth is.

Whatever the reason, if it’s something you’ve been thinking about – whether due to ongoing controversy, or to cut back on your entertainment subscriptions – it’s not too difficult to cancel.

Here’s how to cancel your Spotify account.

How to cancel your Spotify Premium

The easiest way to cancel your Spotify Premium is to switch to the Free plan.

Log in to Spotify.com/account and you’ll see all of your account information. Scroll down the Overview page and you’ll find a section called ‘Your plan’ detailing how much you pay.

From there, simply click on Change Plan and select Cancel Premium.

You’ll still enjoy the benefits of Premium until your next bill date – at which point you won’t pay anything and will be fully switched over to the Free account.

Of course, the benefits of Spotify Premium will disappear then too, meaning you’ll hear ads amid your podcasts and music playlists.

You’ll have fewer options for skipping songs you don’t like – as well as listening to saved songs and podcasts offline.

You can also fill in this form to have Spotify cancel your paid subscription, instead.

But if you’re seeing no connection to Premium in your account, it might be that you have Premium through another company.

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Spotify as of late

To cancel, find their contact link on your account page under Payment. And if you pay through iTunes, see Apple’s steps to cancel.

How to delete a Spotify Free account

If you only have the free version – or just want rid of Spotify altogether – you can delete your account.

The best way to do that is to head to Contact Spotify Support, and click on Account Settings.

Once you’re there, you’ll see a few links giving you different options. You want the most obvious: Closing Your Account.

Non-Premium users will then be given the option to click a link and close their account for good.
