UK Government Accused of Sabotaging Scotland's Deposit Return Scheme
The UK government is accused of trying to sabotage Scotland's Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), which has been ruled to only include PET plastic bottles, aluminium and steel cans, and not glass bottles.
Scottish ministers had been seeking an exemption from the UK Internal Market Act, but UK ministers argue that having glass in the Scottish scheme could create a "permanent divergence" in the market.
Scottish ministers claim that including glass in the scheme would provide the biggest benefits economically, financially, and environmentally.
The Scottish government has previously noted that all but six of the 51 deposit return schemes operating elsewhere in the world include glass.
