Hidden camera at Whittlesey care home shows abuse before man died

Ron Carter suffered mistreatment at The Gables by carers, one of whom hit him, and staff were caught eating his food.
Mr. Carter, diagnosed with dementia, died in May 2020.

The hidden camera footage led to two arrests, but no one was charged despite evidence of staff incompetence. The involved agency staff were dismissed by HC-One, the company managing the home.

Mr. Carter's daughter installed the camera due to concerns about abuse in care homes. She expressed regret not reviewing the footage sooner, as her father was cremated without a post-mortem exam.

The video showed a care worker hitting Mr. Carter, who was also filmed expressing his dislike of the home. His diabetic meals were eaten by staff, and amid a COVID-19 outbreak, other residents freely entered his room.

A carer present on the day Mr. Carter died was oblivious to his passing and his family was unaware of his "do not resuscitate" order. Following these events, HC-One closed The Gables and its four other Cambridgeshire homes due to multiple failings.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary admitted to delays in the investigation and lost a suspect's interview recording, blaming high workloads. The Crown Prosecution Service declined to prosecute, citing obscured footage and an expired time limit for the common assault charge.

Ms. Carter feels justice wasn't served, condemning the mistreatment of the elderly. NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and the Care Quality Commission showed serious concern over residents' welfare and condemned the mistreatment.
