Former Firearms Officer Rebecca Kalam Awarded Compensation for Sex Discrimination
Former West Midlands Police officer Rebecca Kalam has received over £820,000 in compensation after winning a sex discrimination lawsuit.
Initially awarded £30,000, Kalam has now received full compensation for her lost earnings and pension. She had aspired to rise to the rank of chief constable.
Deputy Chief Constable Scott Green of West Midlands Police acknowledged the ordeal faced by Kalam and apologized for the delay in addressing her complaints.
The tribunal uncovered distressing instances, including Kalam being undressed to her underwear during training and being demeaned while performing press-ups.
Kalam's legal victory covers harassment, sex discrimination, and victimization, totaling £820,720 in damages. Following the ruling, the force disclosed that three officers are suspended, and ten face disciplinary actions.
Despite her ambitions and love for the job, Kalam aimed to combat the department's internal culture. The tribunal panel unanimously agreed on her compensation.
West Midlands Police have not revealed their legal expenses in this case. Support from the Metropolitan Police Federation highlighted concerns about internal protection within the police service.
The police statement detailed efforts to revamp culture and standards within the firearms unit, particularly over the last two years. DCC Green emphasized the recent progress in professional conduct and the importance of public trust in the force's duty.
