Fishermen's Mission Partners with Citizen's Advice to Bring Financial Support to Channel Islands Fishing Communities
The Fishermen's Mission charity has launched a new program in the Channel Islands to better support fishing communities.
Due to the unpredictable nature of their work, fishermen often find it difficult to attend appointments for financial assistance.
The charity has partnered with Citizen's Advice Guernsey and Jersey to make referrals more accessible.
They now help fishermen complete their referrals while they are working long hours at sea.
Hayley Hamlett, mission area officer at The Fishermen's Mission, stated, "We understand the difficulty of not being able to go and queue up, so that's why we started working with the partner organizations." The Fishermen's Mission has been visiting the islands in recent months to inform fishermen about the support available to them, particularly for retired fishermen and their families.
Joe Lewis, a retired fisherman from Jersey, attended a presentation to learn about the resources offered.
He emphasized the importance of spreading the word, as fishermen may be reluctant to ask for help.
Mr. Lewis personally values the knowledge that assistance is available and believes it could benefit his close friends as well.
