Farage Claims Bank Closed Personal and Business Accounts in 'Serious Political Persecution'
Nigel Farage, a prominent Brexiteer, has claimed that his bank closed his personal and business accounts, citing it as "serious political persecution" from an anti-Brexit banking industry.
Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has expressed concern that banks may be closing customer accounts for political reasons, and the government is investigating payment providers over account closures.
The government is reviewing payment services regulations, including the practice of firms closing down accounts of people or businesses with views the lender does not agree with.
UK Finance, which represents the banking industry, said lenders should discuss the closure of an account with a customer "so far as is feasible and permissible," but there may be situations where it is not appropriate or permissible to engage in a dialogue.
