'Explosion' at seaside port sees thick black smoke pouring into sky
A huge smoke cloud can be seen above a seaside port while firefighters tackle a blaze. People living near Newhaven, East Sussex, reported hearing an explosion at around 9.30am this morning.
Massive plumes of black smoke are coming from a building in an industrial unit, and nearby residents are being asked to keep their doors and windows closed. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has sent 12 crews to the scene and has closed the area off.
It said it has received more than 30 calls to 999 about the fire in Beach Road.
A spokesperson from the fire service said: ‘Please avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed to avoid the smoke.’ There are currently 12 crews in attendance at the scene and the fire brigade has told people to avoid the area. The huge smoke cloud can be spotted as far away as Brighton. There have been no reports of any injuries.
