Just Stop Oil activists pour liquid over Tesla's Optimus robot, demanding urgent climate action from the UK government.
On Wednesday, in a notable protest against fossil fuel reliance, Just Stop Oil activists poured liquid latex over an Optimus robot located at the Westfield
Tesla store in London.
This demonstration was part of a wider campaign urging the UK government to implement a complete phase-out of fossil fuel combustion by 2030. The protest featured two activists, 74-year-old retired teacher Catherine Rennie Nash and 63-year-old retired tax advisor Nigel Fleming, who climbed onto a podium at approximately 10:15 AM to carry out the act.
In footage released by Just Stop Oil, Fleming is heard stating a critical perspective of wealth disparities, remarking, “While the rich dream of Nazi robots and swasti-cars, what the rest of us need is warm housing, clean affordable energy and cheap public transport.” He asserted that immediate action is necessary to develop an emergency plan to transition the economy away from oil and gas by 2030.
Nash echoed Fleming's sentiments, emphasizing concerns about the UK government’s handling of climate crises.
She contended that inaction could lead to severe consequences such as global food destruction and mass starvation, labeling the detrimental influence of fossil fuel companies as a threat to democracy.
The protest targeted Musk, alleging that his actions with
Tesla are harmful to societal welfare, claiming he focuses on personal gain over addressing critical issues like climate change and public health.
The statement from Nash included assertions about billionaire influence impacting civil society negatively.
Just Stop Oil has also reported that sales of
Tesla vehicles have plummeted following a series of protests and calls for boycotts linked to scrutiny over Musk's political associations and rhetoric.
Notably, recent reports highlighted a decline in demand for
Tesla cars coinciding with Musk's visible alignment with far-right political movements.
According to a spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police, two individuals were arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage at the shopping center.
The police were notified of the incident around 10:00 AM, leading to the apprehension of Nash and Fleming, who were later taken to a central London police station where they remained in custody.
In recent weeks, activists have broadened their scope, targeting
Tesla facilities across Europe and North America.
Reports indicate incidents such as arson at
Tesla factories and showrooms in the United States and France, highlighting the intensifying nature of protests against the electric vehicle manufacturer.
In a separate incident, two other Just Stop Oil activists plead not guilty to criminal damage after spray-painting the grave of Charles Darwin in Westminster Abbey during a protest on January 13. The activists, Alyson Lee, 66, and Diane Bligh, 77, expressed their belief that their actions were proportionate to the global threat of climate change, despite pending charges of criminal damage.
Their trial is set to be delayed significantly due to court backlogs.
