Mercedes driver, Octavian Cadar, 39, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for causing the death of Vanessa Sagnay de la Bastida, the daughter of an Ecuadorian politician, on 16 March 2022.
Vanessa, a 27-year-old psychologist, was crossing the road with her fiancé, Michael Williams, near Wandsworth Bridge when Cadar approached at 55mph, more than double the 20mph speed limit.
The impact caused Vanessa to suffer fatal injuries. During the trial, Cadar blamed the couple for 'messing about in the road' but later admitted this was incorrect.
He was also disqualified from driving for 10 years and eight months. Vanessa's fiancé and her mother shared emotional statements recounting their grief and Vanessa's accomplishments.
The court heard that the accident could have been avoided had Cadar been driving at 30mph.
