Boris Johnson has resigned as a UK Member of Parliament after claiming he was "forced out of Parliament" over the "Partygate" report.
The report by the Commons Privileges Committee was investigating whether he misled the Commons over Downing Street lockdown parties.
Johnson denied knowingly or recklessly misleading the Commons and accused the committee of bias.
He also criticized the direction of the government and called for a pro-growth and pro-investment agenda.
Johnson's exit will trigger a by-election in his constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip.
The Privileges Committee has followed proper procedures and will continue to do so in light of
Boris Johnson's statement.
The committee will meet on Monday to conclude its inquiry and publish its report.
Angela Rayner of Labour criticized the situation as a "never-ending Tory soap opera," while Daisy Cooper of the Liberal Democrats called
Johnson's departure "good riddance." Mhairi Black of the SNP said that no one in Scotland will be sorry to see
Johnson go.
Former home secretary
Priti Patel praised
Johnson for his work on Ukraine and Brexit, describing him as a "political titan." The former prime minister's local Conservative association chairman, Richard Mills, supports him, and another sitting MP criticized the Privileges Committee's treatment of
Johnson.
