Wynne Evans Apologises for 'Inappropriate' Comment at Strictly Tour

The Welsh opera singer issues an apology after making a sexualised remark during the Strictly Come Dancing live tour launch.
Welsh opera singer Wynne Evans has issued a public apology following an 'inappropriate and unacceptable' comment made during the Strictly Come Dancing live tour launch earlier this month.

The remark, which was recorded by a Mail on Sunday reporter at the Birmingham Arena, occurred as the group prepared for a photo on stage.

Evans, 52, expressed regret for his language in a statement to BBC News, saying he sincerely apologised for the incident.

A spokesperson for the Strictly Live Tour and BBC Studios stated that Evans had been made aware that such behaviour was not tolerated, and clarified that no complaints had been received prior to the incident.

Evans, who participated in BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing last year alongside dance partner Katya Jones, is currently performing in the UK tour, which concludes on February 9. The BBC Radio Wales presenter was unable to dance in Glasgow due to an ankle injury but continued to sing at the event.

While Evans' behaviour during the show garnered attention, with some viewers noting awkward interactions, Jones defended their previous moments as light-hearted jokes, including an incident where she appeared to turn down a high-five from Evans.

The Strictly Come Dancing franchise has faced scrutiny over allegations of inappropriate conduct from some of its professional dancers.

Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima left the show in 2023 after facing claims of improper behaviour towards their dance partners, with the BBC apologising to actress Amanda Abbington for Pernice's verbal bullying and harassment.

In response, the BBC introduced new welfare measures, including chaperones and additional training for dancers and staff.

Evans is best known for his role in the Go.Compare adverts and is also a presenter on BBC Radio Wales.

His latest project, the BBC series 'Wynne & Joanna: All at Sea,' with actress Joanna Page, premieres on Monday.

BBC Wales fully supports the statement issued by BBC Studios, reinforcing the stance that unacceptable behaviour is not tolerated.
