Wild swimmers apply for River Tone bathing water status

A popular swimming spot could get bathing water status if an application by a wild swimming group is successful.

A wild swimming group has applied to designate the River Tone at French Weir Park in Taunton as an official bathing water spot.

The effort, backed by over 300 local swimmers and supported by ocean swimmer Beth French, seeks to ensure regular water quality monitoring by the Environment Agency for safety and environmental benefits.

Defra has received the application and will consult the public on all qualifying proposals, with a decision expected by April 2024. The initiative also has support from political figures and is part of a broader push to improve water quality and access.
