Reports indicate that the issues began around 3:10 PM, with London being the most affected area, while cities such as Manchester and Glasgow also experienced notable disruptions.
Data collected by DownDetector indicates that approximately 68,000 users have reported issues since the outage commenced.
The majority of users, roughly 59 percent, have been unable to send messages.
Additionally, 22 percent of reports cited problems with server connections, while 19 percent experienced app failures.
As of the latest updates, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has yet to issue a public statement regarding the outage.
In the wake of the disruption, many users turned to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustrations.
Comments ranged from inquiries about the nature of the outage to humorous observations about users seeking confirmation from peers regarding their connectivity.
One user humorously noted that WhatsApp's downtime had transformed X into a makeshift customer care center, with many wondering if the problem was isolated to themselves.
This incident comes four years after a more extensive outage that affected Meta's services for seven hours, leading to significant financial losses estimated at $100 million.
During that incident, engineers were required to physically visit data centers to restore service.
