Where Will Electric Cars Charge?

To integrate electric cars widely, expanded charging infrastructure is necessary. Chargers positioned along curbs face competition from pedestrians and those with disabilities. One proposal is to retrofit existing structures, like lampposts.

SimpleCharge, a Latvian company, innovates by adapting lampposts for EV charging, avoiding new cable installation and minimizing costs to approximately €1,500 per unit.

Similarly, Dutch firm CityCharge upgrades lighting poles for charging functions, though it requires new wiring and costs between €3,000 and €4,000.

Both companies offer chargers able to deliver up to 22kW, suitable for constant operation, though in areas with aged infrastructure, nighttime charging is more practical.

ubitricity, owned by Shell, also integrates chargers into lampposts and specifically designed bollards. Concealing chargers to maintain aesthetics is a focus for some companies, with Trojan Energy creating pavement-flush charging points indiscernible from manhole covers, sensitive to accessibility concerns.

Elsewhere, BT Group aims to repurpose old telecom cabinets into chargers, potentially modifying upwards of 60,000 units. Moreover, mobile chargers like Nyobolt's Bolt-ee, an ultra-rapid unit with up to 300kW output, offer portable solutions in settings like airport car parks.

Hyundai is also experimenting with a robot that automatically connects cars to chargers.

Mobile technology presents solutions for emergency power needs and could help address charging inequality. Bolt-ee boasts more than 10,000 battery cycles and cost-effectiveness, but safety concerns over transporting high-capacity batteries persist.

Although no single strategy can satisfy the escalating demand, combining innovative approaches could substantially support EV adoption. The burgeoning charging sector remains ripe for creative contributions from emerging companies, potentially reshaping this complex terrain.
