On February 28, 2025, messaging application WhatsApp faced a significant outage, impacting thousands of users across the United Kingdom.

Reports indicated that at least 38,000 users experienced difficulties in sending or receiving messages, as reported by DownDetector, which tracks online service outages.

The issue began earlier in the day, leading to widespread frustration among users who rely on the platform for daily communications.

Service disruptions appeared to resolve relatively quickly, though no official comment was provided by Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, regarding the cause of the outage or the specific timeline for the restoration of normal functionality.

This inconvenience comes on the heels of a separate incident involving Meta’s other social media platform, Instagram.

Recently, the company issued an apology after users complained about disturbing content, including graphic violence and images of deceased individuals, appearing on the platform's Reels feature.

This feature, which enables users to share short videos similar to those on TikTok, reportedly malfunctioned due to issues with the algorithm responsible for curating content.

Instagram users reported the appearance of horror-themed graphic material in their feeds earlier in the week, prompting significant concern and complaints about the platform’s content moderation practices.

The simultaneous issues across Meta's platforms have reignited discussions about the reliability and safety of social media services.
