The police force is now subject to heightened scrutiny called "Engage," highlighting the need for a prompt improvement plan. Inspectors criticized the force for poor handling of investigations, vulnerable person protection, and risk management relating to sex offenders.
Chief Constable Craig Guildford attributed some of the criticized issues to an old operational model, noting improvements made since April. Despite disagreeing with the heightened monitoring status, he reassured the public that plans are in place to address these issues.
Foster acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and referenced budget cuts and officer reductions as contributing factors. Union leader Rich Cooke expressed surprise at the decision, indicating a feeling of undervaluation among officers, but committed to addressing the problems.
