‘We need to support our Gov’t’- Violet Thomas-Gaul

Although the majority in the Virgin Islands has praised the Government, led by Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), for its work to protect the Territory during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there have been some who have repeatedly sought to criticise the Government at every turn, regularly ventilating their issues on social media and stirring an air of disunity.

This has caused one talk show host to make an appeal for unity, adding that, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), trust in public institution is vital to Government’s ability to respond rapidly and to secure citizen’s support during this COVID-19 era.

“We need to support our Government. We all need to work together for the good of the country. It is not us against them. As the saying goes, united we stand divided we fall,” the host of Talking Points, Mrs Violet Thomas-Gaul, said on her show aired on ZBVI 780AM on Monday, August 31, 2020.

According to Mrs Thomas-Gaul, scripture speaks about the need for unity and what can happen when there is a lack of it.

“British Virgin Islanders, everyone who lives here in this Territory, that is my plea to all of us today, that we live in peace, knowing that if we do not unite, this Territory will fall, and we cannot allow that.”

Host of Talking Points, Mrs Violet Thomas-Gaul has urged Virgin Islanders and residents to throw their support behind the Government in this global pandemic.

Distorting of information

Mrs Thomas-Gaul cautioned; however, that if persons are not given sufficient information on issues it is common for them to distort the little bit of information, and they believe it to be true.

She said it is her belief that Government should seek credible input from knowledge persons or organisations within the Territory to help carry out their mandates.

“We are aware that we will not be privy to every little detail. While they have been elected to lead they are not all knowing. Only God is,” Mrs Thomas-Gaul said.
