Watchdog Bans Virgin Media's "Fastest Wi-Fi" Advertisement

Virgin Media's claim of offering the "fastest wi-fi" has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) due to misleading implications. The ad suggested Virgin provided superior internet speed over competitors.

Despite Virgin Media's defense, asserting a unique guarantee of minimum 30Mbps wi-fi speed or customer bill credit, the ASA decided this message was unclear. Customers likely perceived the ad as a promise of the overall fastest wi-fi service, not a minimum speed assurance.

Rival Vodafone's complaint led to the investigation, noting its own minimum speed guarantee is 10Mbps. The ASA instructed Virgin not to imply an unmatched speed guarantee unless it's factual.

The controversial advert appeared on Virgin's site, promising a £100 credit for insufficient speeds, subject to conditions like fibre optic availability. Despite no public complaints and claims of customer understanding, Virgin must refrain from airing the ad in its current form.
