Ashford borough council, responsible for Dover, warned of the potential for severe traffic jams if no preventative actions are taken. The system will require travelers to provide fingerprints, a photograph, and passport details upon entering the EU. Previous post-Brexit changes have already led to congestion in the area.
Visit Kent voiced concerns about the impact of further delays on the region's economy. Lengthy waits could also disrupt access to Eurotunnel in Folkestone, with backups anticipated along the A20 and M20.
Eurostar anticipated over an hour wait at peak times without improvements, and HS1 indicated the lack of online pre-registration might strain St Pancras International.
Downing Street downplayed these concerns, stating that effective contingency plans are in place and that cooperation with France and port authorities is ongoing to minimize traveler delays.
Sir Bill Cash, the committee chair, highlighted the urgent need for decision-makers to address these potential disruptions before the system's October implementation.
