This development comes in response to a series of import taxes announced by the Trump administration that have rattled investors.
On Friday, the S&P 500 index experienced a drop of as much as 3.6%, falling to around 5,200 points shortly after the New York Stock Exchange opened.
This marks the index's lowest level since August.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average also plunged by approximately 3%, while the Nasdaq Composite, which is heavily weighted towards technology stocks, fell around the same percentage.
In European markets, declines were pronounced, with London's FTSE 100 index plummeting by about 4.5%, totaling a loss of approximately 380 points by late afternoon.
Similarly, Germany's DAX index decreased by around 4.6%, and France’s CAC 40 fell by 4%.
The cause of the renewed market turbulence was China’s announcement of a 34% tariff on all US imports, effective from April 10. This tariff directly counters the recently implemented US tariffs, matching the rate imposed by the Trump administration.
Market analysts, including Roman Ziruk, a senior market analyst at financial services firm Ebury, noted that these measures have heightened concerns among investors.
Ziruk pointed out that global equities continued to decline with the US dollar reversing earlier gains.
He indicated that investors are increasingly anxious not only about the direct economic effects of the tariffs, particularly given the existing trade imbalance between the two nations but also about the potential for further escalation of the trade conflict from the US side.
As these tariffs take effect, market leaders and economists continue to monitor the implications for global trade dynamics.
