Wales 20mph: Labour MP backs law after 'bonkers' comment

A statement made by Labour MP Sir Chris Bryant regarding the Welsh government's 20mph speed limit law. On BBC Question Time, Sir Chris initially expressed criticism of the law, describing it as "bonkers" in some areas where speed limits shift between 20mph and 30mph.

However, following this statement, Sir Chris clarified his position, emphasizing that he was criticizing local decisions regarding the implementation of the speed limits rather than the overall scheme. He highlighted the need for a "full review" of the guidance.

In September, Wales became the first UK nation to introduce a default speed limit of 20mph on restricted roads with lampposts placed not more than 200 yards apart. This change primarily affects residential and built-up areas with a significant number of pedestrians.

The exchange between Sir Chris Bryant and Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford took place during a session of the Welsh Parliament, with Drakeford asserting that Bryant supported the 20mph scheme and quoting him as saying that "everybody believes that outside a school and a hospital, and a clinic, and a chemist and in some residential areas it should be 20mph."

The leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, challenged Drakeford's interpretation of Bryant's comments, leading to further clarification from Sir Chris Bryant. The debate also touched on the use of WhatsApp by government officials, as Drakeford had previously mentioned the possibility of deleted messages during the pandemic.
