Voters Believe Labour Would Outperform Conservatives on Housing and House Prices

Voters are more confident in Labour than the Conservatives for managing housing issues and stabilizing house prices, with a recent Opinium poll for the Observer revealing that Labour is favored to address key concerns such as the economy, health, education, environment, immigration, and crime. Their position is now on par with Conservatives even in areas like defence, which has historically been a Conservative strength.

Keir Starmer, at Labour's annual conference, committed to constructing 1.5 million new homes within five years of a Labour government and proposed an overhaul of the planning system including establishing new towns and increasing green energy investments.

The poll indicated that 34% of voters believe Labour, led by Starmer, would best handle housing and housing prices, compared to 16% for the Conservatives led by Rishi Sunak. Labour also leads in preferences on economic (32% to 26%), immigration (30% to 22%), and is neck-and-neck with the Conservatives on defence at 26%. Moreover, the gap between Labour and the Conservatives has widened slightly, with Labour gaining 2 points, climbing to 42%, while the Conservatives remained at 27%.

Adam Drummond of Opinium noted the Conservatives' troubling outlook as they struggle to regain public trust on key issues with an election approaching, emphasizing Labour's lead on all top national concerns.
