This innovative approach utilizes specialized drones equipped with light beam technology developed by Alphabet's X labs, which is designed to establish temporary connections over distances of up to three kilometers.
The trials were conducted in Seville, where two industry-grade drones were deployed—one linked to a mobile phone mast and the other connected to a Vodafone data transport hub.
The demonstration successfully established a two-way communication channel for a brief duration, showcasing the potential of this technology to address connectivity interruptions caused by accidental damage, natural disasters, or vandalism.
Vodafone reported that it experiences between 75 and 100 instances of cable breaks annually.
The introduction of this drone technology could serve as a proactive measure to maintain mobile services during emergencies and assist in disaster recovery operations.
Furthermore, the mobile operator is scheduled to present the outcomes of this trial at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
In addition to the drone initiative, Vodafone will also unveil a weather sensing network designed to optimize mobile signals across Europe in response to adverse weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall, which can impact signal quality.
The company is collaborating with the European Space Agency and the UK Government to collect accurate rainfall data and create a comprehensive weather map for regions lacking access to conventional weather monitoring systems.
