"Victory of Ukrainian-Born Model in Miss Japan Reignites Identity Debate
Ukrainian-born Carolina Shiino, who became a naturalized Japanese citizen, sparked a renewed identity debate after winning the Miss Japan title.
Despite speaking fluent Japanese and being raised in Nagoya since age five, her victory has drawn mixed reactions, highlighting Japan's ongoing discussion on ethnicity and national identity.
Her accomplishment comes after Ariana Miyamoto, a bi-racial woman, faced similar scrutiny upon winning in 2015. Some social media users argued that Shiino, with her purely Ukrainian heritage, does not embody the traditional image of Miss Japan.
Others speculated her selection was influenced by politics rather than beauty alone. However, pageant organizer Ai Wada praised Shiino's proficiency in Japanese culture and language, affirming the judges' choice.
Shiino herself expressed her deep connection to Japan and gratitude for being recognized as Japanese when accepting her award.
