Vehicle Damage Claims Drop in Wales After Speed Limit Reduction
Vehicle damage claims with esure in Wales have dropped by 20% since the 20mph speed limit was enacted last September, making Wales the first UK nation to adopt such legislation. Despite mixed reactions and political opposition, early data shows reduced speeds and fewer accidents. Rod King from 20’s Plenty for Us notes significant benefits, including fewer casualties and reduced insurance claims.
Since the introduction of a nationwide 20mph speed limit in built-up areas in Wales last September, vehicle damage claims with one leading car insurer, esure, have decreased by 20%.
Wales was the first nation in the UK to adopt such legislation.
The Welsh government received mixed reactions, with strong support for the measure near schools, housing estates, and hospitals, but opposition in other areas.
Notably, the Conservatives in the Welsh Senedd have fiercely opposed the plan.
Early trials showed a reduction in average speeds by 3mph, with later data indicating a 4mph drop.
Conservative promises include legislation to limit the use of 20mph routes and reverse London's Ulez clean air zone.
Rod King, founder of the campaign group 20’s Plenty for Us, confirmed the benefits in reduced casualties and insurance claims.
