The Vatican has issued a new doctrine, titled "Infinite Dignity," which classifies gender-affirming surgery and surrogacy as grave violations of human dignity.
These practices are now considered on par with abortion and euthanasia, as they reject God's plan for human life.
The Vatican reiterated its rejection of "gender theory," which suggests one's gender can be changed, and urged people not to try and "make oneself God" by altering their biological sex.
This doctrine, which has been in development for five years, was approved by
Pope Francis and published on March 25, 2023.
The Vatican released a document stating that any sex-change interventions pose a risk to an individual's dignity, which they receive from conception.
The document differentiated between gender-affirming surgeries, which it rejected, and genital abnormalities that can be "resolved" with healthcare professionals.
LGBTQ+ Catholic advocates criticized the document as outdated, harmful, and contradictory to recognizing the "infinite dignity" of all God's children.
They warned that the document could fuel anti-trans violence and discrimination in real life.
