The US government has alerted state governors to ongoing disruptive cyberattacks by foreign actors targeting the nation's water and sewage systems.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and EPA Administrator Michael Regan issued a letter highlighting recent incidents involving Iranian and Chinese hackers.

The Iranian-linked hackers reportedly disabled equipment at a Pennsylvania water facility, while the group "Volt Typhoon" is suspected of infiltrating multiple American water infrastructure systems.

Sullivan and Regan emphasized the attacks' threat to the essential supply of clean water and the financial burden they impose on communities. Both China and Iran, who have historically denied such allegations, had not responded to these specific claims.

The letter stresses the critical yet vulnerable state of water facilities' cybersecurity and urges governors to review and enhance cybersecurity measures across all state water systems to mitigate future risks.
