Del Toro, while in London, encouraged the UK to re-evaluate its military resources, noting the rare instance of such explicit advice reflecting the special military relationship between the US and the UK.
Notwithstanding the joint efforts against the Houthi attacks in Yemen, Del Toro sees no immediate necessity for increased British military involvement.
The Royal Navy's recent decommissioning of two frigates due to a shortage of sailors, and the army's reduced headcount, the lowest since 1714, underscore potential vulnerabilities.
Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute, Del Toro emphasized the strategic importance of investment in the UK's navy to safeguard commercial shipping.
While recognizing that defense spending decisions rest with the UK, Del Toro pointed to continuous substantial investments by the US, even amidst economic pressures. The US leads global military expenditure, with the UK ranking sixth.
Del Toro expressed satisfaction with the UK's naval actions in the Red Sea, particularly HMS Diamond's role in air defense. On the question of expanding operations to target Iran, suspected of supporting the Houthis, Del Toro said all options remain open.
