The State Department will announce a pilot program that will allow some Indians and other foreign workers on H-1B visas to renew their visas in the US without having to travel abroad.
The program is part of efforts to improve visa access for Indians and to knit together the two largest democracies.
The US has been working to get around the lack of political will in Congress to comprehensively reform US immigration policy.
The ability for some temporary foreign workers to renew visas in the US would free up resources for visa interviews in consulates abroad.
The White House has declined to comment on the matter.
