University of Kentucky’s Youling Xiong Receives SEC Faculty Achievement Award for 2026
Distinguished food science researcher recognised for global impact, leadership, and academic excellence
Dr Youling Xiong of the University of Kentucky has been named a recipient of the 2026 Southeastern Conference Faculty Achievement Award, recognising his distinguished contributions to research, teaching, and academic leadership.
The award, presented annually by the Southeastern Conference, honours one faculty member from each member institution whose work demonstrates exceptional impact within their field and beyond.
Recipients are selected by senior academic leaders and represent the highest level of scholarly excellence across the conference’s universities.
Dr Xiong, a Gatton Foundation Distinguished Professor in food science, has built an internationally recognised research programme focused on protein chemistry and its applications in food systems.
His work has significantly advanced understanding in areas such as muscle protein functionality, antioxidant systems, and the development of alternative protein sources.
Over the course of his career, he has published extensively in leading scientific journals, contributing to both fundamental science and practical innovations in food technology.
His research has attracted substantial funding and has influenced developments in both academic and industry settings, particularly in improving food quality and nutritional outcomes.
In addition to his research achievements, Dr Xiong is widely recognised for his commitment to teaching and mentorship.
He has guided numerous graduate students and early-career researchers, helping to shape the next generation of scientists in food science and related disciplines.
The SEC Faculty Achievement Awards programme, established in 2012, highlights the critical role of faculty members in advancing the academic missions of their institutions.
Each recipient also becomes their university’s nominee for the conference’s Professor of the Year honour, which will be announced later in the academic year.
Dr Xiong’s recognition reflects both his individual accomplishments and the broader strength of the University of Kentucky’s research community, reinforcing its position as a leading centre for innovation and scholarship in the United States.
